CES 2011 was a great success. It was like having a massive geek-gasm, seeing all those awesome smartphones and tablets in one place. If there were two words that one got to hear a lot at CES, they were Android and Tablet.

There were a lot of new tablet announcements, most of them powered by Android. Besides these, there were also many good Android smartphones unveiled at CES by the likes of HTC, Samsung etc. In this article, I will take you through the list of the top 5 best Android smartphones showcased at CES 2011.

LG Optimus 2X
If there is one device which was highly anticipated, with fans dying to finally see it at CES 2011, it was the LG Optimus 2X. It is the first dual core smartphone which comes with a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor.

It has 512 MB RAM and comes with an 8 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. It will run Android 2.2 Froyo and will launch soon. It has a 4 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display and can record 1080p video as well. It has all the basics in place - GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS etc.


Motorola Atrix 4G
The Motorola Atrix 4G is also a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 toting Android smartphone which runs Android 2.2 Froyo with an Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade in the pipeline. It comes with a 1 GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and 1 GB RAM. It has a 4.0 inch display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. It has a 5 MP camera and can record 720p videos at 30 FPS.

It comes with 16 GB internal memory and offers 3G HSDPA connectivity with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS etc. It comes with the Webtop dock, which you can use to convert it into a netbook.

Motorola Droid Bionic
The Droid Bionic was one of the most impressive phones at CES 2011. It comes with a 4.3 inch qHD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. It has an 8 MP camera with autofocus and dual LED flash and can record 720p videos at 30 FPS.

It is powered by a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and 512 MB RAM. It will come with Android 2.2 Froyo but will receive some Gingerbread goodness soon. It comes with both 3G and 4G LTE connectivity.

Samsung Infuse 4G
Ever since the Galaxy S launched, Samsung has become the leader in Android smartphones. The Galaxy S is easily the most popular Android phone yet. At CES 2011, Samsung showcased the Samsung Infuse 4G, which takes it a step further.

It is like an improved, upgraded version of the Galaxy S. It has a huge 4.5 inch SuperAMOLED Plus display with a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor. It has 1 GB RAM and comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of Android. It also has an 8 MP camera with autofocus and sports GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
The Xperia Arc was one of the most stylish phones on show at CES 2011. It has a very sleek design and comes packed with power. It has a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM and an Adreno 205 GPU. It comes with 16 GB internal storage and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

It has a 4.2 inch LED backlit capacitive display and comes with an 8 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. It can record 720p HD video and includes GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS etc.

WASHINGTON - Microsoft berencana untuk menghadirkan kembali ponsel pintar terbarunya yang berbasis Windows. Smartphone tersebut diperkirakan akan dijual pada 11 Oktober nanti.

Straits Times melansir berita ini dari Harian Wall Street Journal, Jumat (1/10/2010). Dikabarkan, smartphone dengan sistem operasi Windows tersebut akan dijual secara eksklusif bekerja sama dengan AT&T.

Perusahaan software terbesar di dunia itu akan menjual tiga jenis smartphone berbasis Windows Phone 7 dari berbagai merek, yaitu LG , Samsung dan HTC. AT&T sendiri dikabarkan akan menjualnya lebih dulu, yaitu pada 8 November nanti.

Sistem operasi Windows memang telah kehilangan pamor setelah Apple dengan gencar meluncurkan iPhone. Bahkan posisi OS mobile Microsoft semakin tergencet oleh kehadiran platform Blackberry RIM dan Android Google. Peluncuran ponsel Windows ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kemballi pangsa pasar OS Mobile Microsoft.

Menurut firma riset Gartner, pangsa pasar sistem operasi Microsoft di dunia tahun ini akan turun mencapai 4,7 persen. Padahal tahun lalu pangsa pasarnya sempat mencapai 8,7 persen.

Bulan Juni lalu, Microsoft mengatakan telah menghentikan pengembangan ponsel pintarnya yang bernama Kin. Microsoft lebih memilih fokus sebagai penyedia software ketimbang mengembangkan handset.

Namun rumor ini masih belum bisa dipastikan. Pasalnya Wall Street Journal pun hanya mengutip pernyataan ini dari sumber mereka di Microsoft. Namun saat dihubungi AFP, pihak Microsoft menolak untuk berkomentar mengenai rumor dan spekulasi.

JAKARTA - Berbarengan dengan ajang Nokia World 2010 yang digelar di London pada 14-15 September silam, HTC pun menggelar event sejenis pada 15 September. Yang disodorkan oleh pabrikan asal Taiwan ini adalah dua produk dari sub-brand Desire. Keduanya mengusung OS Android dan memakai versi 2.2 (Froyo).

Seakan ingin pula merangsek pasar dengan teknologi terbaru dengan komponennya. Sebut saja layar yang memakai Super LCD (S-LCD). Padahal layar jenis ini yang kabarnya akan menggantikan AMOLED, justru dibuat oleh konsorsium antara Samsung Electronics dengan Sony. Namun, di ponsel justru HTC lah yang mengenalkan pada dua serinya, Desire HD dan Desire Z yang dirilis secara resmi di London.

Yang menarik memang seri Desire HD. Seri ini berukuran 12,3 x6,8 cm dengan ketebalan 1,18 cm saja. Dari keseluruhan perangkat kerasnya, yang paling menonjol adalah pada sektor kamera. Dengan resolusi 8 MP dan jaminan kemudahan pemakaian, serta prosesornya yang dipasok oleh Qualcomm dengan seri Snapdragon-nya (1 GHz).

Jika, Samsung memiliki UI TouchWiz, maka HTC pun punya HTC Sense. Sebenarnya Desire HD seolah diset untuk menandingi Samsung Tablet namun dikemas dalam ukuran yang lebih kecil alias setara dimensi ponsel umumnya. Tak heran jika layarnya pun hanya 4,3 inci.

Sedangkan seri Desire Z tampak disiapkan untuk pengguna yang lebih menyukai input memakai tombol QWERTY. Dengan spek yang sedikit di bawah Desire HD (misalnya prosesornya hanya 800 Mhz dan kameranya 5 MP), namun untuk ukuran sebuah ponsel Android, seri seberat 180 gram ini justru lebih lengkap. Selain layar sentuh juga tambahan touchpad optik bagi yang terbiasa browsing layaknya BlackBerry.

Apple telah dituntut oleh Nokia. Dakwaannya, melanggar lima paten penting pada iPhone dan iPad 3G. Menurut juru bicara Nokia, Paul Melin, perseteruan paten ini terkait dengan teknologi untuk meningkatkan transmisi data dan percakapan. "(Teknologi) penggunaan penempatan data di aplikasi dan inovasi di konfigurasi antena yang meningkatkan kinerja dan menghemat tempat memungkinkan perangkat yang lebih kecil dan lebih kompak," jelas Melin.

"Nokia adalah pengembang pemimpin dari banyak teknologi kunci di perangkat mobile. Kami telah mengambil langkah ini untuk melindungi hasil-hasil dari pengembangan pionir kami dan mengakhiri penggunaan tak legal dari inovasi Nokia," kata Melin.

Casey Johnston dari Ars Technica mengatakan bahwa sebagai ganti tuntutan penuhnya mungkin saja Nokia tertarik menerima pembayaran royalti dari penjualan iPhone and iPad. "Ini akan membuat Nokia menerima 1-2 persen dari setiap penjualan atau sekitar 6-12 dollar AS per iPhone dan 10-17 dollar AS per iPad," katanya.

The rumor mill is gearing up for the launch of Apple's fourth-generation iPhone, and the latest rumor has an aroma of fermented hops and barley.

Many observers expect Apple to release a new model in late spring or early summer. CEO Steve Jobs said recently that an updated mobile OS would be ready this summer--a perfect opportunity to release new iPhone hardware. Fueling speculation that a June launch is imminent is a report from Boy Genius Report that it has "confirmed with multiple AT&T sources that the carrier has now put a block on employees taking vacations in June."

Engadget is fanning the flames with photographs it says contain images of the forthcoming phone. Here's Engadget's explanation on how the images surfaced:

Apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

Perhaps bolstering Engadget's report is a Twitpic posted in February that bears a striking resemblance to Engadget's images. However, other blogs reported that the images were actually of a Japanese iPhone counterfeit. As "proof" of the validity its report, Engadget reposted a grainy, heavily redacted photo it posted with a January iPad prototype story it now says shows the forthcoming iPhone sitting next to the then-yet-to-be released iPad.

Additionally, a MacRumors reader posted these images--purportedly from a Chinese Web site--that appear similar to those posted earlier by Engadget, although some readers suggest these are really images of the what was described as a Japanese counterfeit.

Of course, one has to wonder whether a company that guards the secrecy of its unreleased products as fiercely as Apple would actually allow an employee to take a prototype out to mingle with pretzels and spilled beer.

Update April 19 at 7:15 a.m. PDT: Gizmodo is now weighing in with a lengthy post titled "This is Apple's Next iPhone." Where Engadget says the device it's reporting on was found in a bar in San Jose, Gizmodo claims that it got hold of a gadget "found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS."

And, says Gizmodo: "We disassembled it. It's the real thing."

Whereupon it offers up a bevy of photos and video, along with details such as a "front-facing video chat camera," camera flash, micro-SIM, and a larger battery.

Beyond that, Gizmodo assembles such an array of circumstantial evidence as to suggest that, in Gizmodo's judgment, "there's very little possibility that it's a fake." Those clues range from Daring Fireball's John Gruber asserting that a prototype iPhone has gone missing from Apple to the lack of firmware for the device (which reportedly "was running iPhone OS 4.0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement," though it was later remotely killed by Apple), and the fact, Gizmodo says, that the device "behaves exactly like an iPhone does when connected to a computer" and that "Mac OS X's System Profiler also reports this as an iPhone in restore mode...but report different product identifiers (both CPID and CPRV) than either the 3G or the 3GS."

BARCELONA - Omnifone, the digital music service provider, is to make its MusicStation offering available to all mobile handsets which carry Google Inc's Android operating platform, it said on Monday.

Omnifone, which already provides its service to the likes of British pay TV company BSkyB and Vodafone, said it would debut its service on the Google Nexus One and HTC handsets at the Mobile World Congress industry event in Barcelona.

MusicStation for Android will offer all users on the Android platform immediate access to a catalog of over 6.5 million tracks, with additional features such as search and discovery systems, social networking aspects and news updates.

"Omnifone is delighted to be able to deliver the richest and most sophisticated music capability on mobile, and one that will work effortlessly on any manufacturer's Android device," Omnifone Chief Executive Rob Lewis said.

Mobile operators and handset makers have all started to offer music services in a bid to increase customer loyalty and grow revenues.

Samsung had a slow start in Android but they are making up for it with some impressive high-tech devices. But the All-star team is certainly not leaving anyone behind and the Galaxy Spica just got its update to the latest Android 2.1. Now it's as ready as ever to hit the competition. And it hits hard.

Devices like the I9000 Galaxy S and the I8520 Beam certainly have the lead but it's down to the foot soldiers to clean up the mess when super AMOLEDs, Snapdragon and WVGA projectors leave the scene.

Speaking of those - you'll know that when it's Samsung and a Galaxy, the middle name is Android. It holds true for the I5700 Galaxy Spica much as it did for the first-born Samsung droid – the I7500 Galaxy.

The Spica goes by the name of Galaxy Lite in some markets, but this has nothing to do with processing power. It packs a faster CPU than the original Galaxy and, as a matter of fact, 800 MHz is better than most droids get.

The Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica normally comes with the Android Cupcake (v1.5) but you can upgrade it to the new Éclair (v2.1). That’s exactly what we did. Anyway, the Spica is still a first-gen droid on the outside: plenty of buttons and an average touchscreen – in both size and resolution.

A thing to definitely note is TouchWIZ. In their first go at Android, Samsung were not too keen perhaps on customization. Under Android 2.1 the Galaxy Spica is a different story. It has the company’s custom touch interface on top of Android and although it’s not a complete overhaul, the first impressions are quite positive.

The rest of the package is standard Android with some of the improvements ver. 2.1 implies. The Spica offers a wide range of connectivity options, including HSDPA support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You can transfer files over Bluetooth as well. Another Éclair goodie is not there however – the Spica’s 3.2” capacitive screen does not support multi touch. The Live wallpapers feature is also not present.

Media have always been a Samsung forte and the 3.5mm audio jack and 3MP autofocus camera is the least the Spica can offer to assert this claim. What users will certainly cheer is the DivX/XviD video support right out of the box.
