The elusive white Nokia N9 is now available

Nokia has just released the white color version of its MeeGo flagship. The white Nokia N9 was officially announced at this year's Nokia World, but it's only now that you can actually purchase one.

We were contacted by one of our readers, who found white Nokia N9 units in a couple of Finnish retail stores. For now these only come in 64GB flavor but at least cost only as much as their black siblings - €629.90.

The white Nokia N9 shares most of its hardware with the black version, but its non-painted unibody is made from glossy, rather than matte plastic. It turned out that the white matte plastic was too easy to get messed up in everyday use, so Nokia went for plastic instead.

We are yet to see if the WP-running Nokia Lumia 800, which shares the N9 body will get a white version, too.

Check out those live shots of the new Nokia N9 that we took at Nokia World 2011 and don't forget to drop us a line in the comments, sharing your thoughts on this beauty. And if you are planning to actually get it and you happen to live in Finland you might follow one of the two source links below to place your order.

New clues of Nokia Champagne and Lumia 900 WP phones appear

We've known for a while now that the Nokia Lumia 800 isn't the real WP flagship by the Finns - the elusive Nokia Lumia 900 will probably take on that role and it just left another clue of its existence. And it brought a friend.

A Windows Phone app, Times of India, was downloaded and used by a Nokia Lumia 900 and a Nokia Champagne, both of which running Windows Phone. But they're running a newer build of WP - 7.10.8725 (7.1 is the internal version for 7.5 Mango).

Could this be the Tango version of Windows Phone that we've heard of? Our earlier encounter with the Champagne suggests that it is.

As for the Lumia 900, we've seen it a couple of times before and heard about some its specs - namely, a 4.3" ClearBlack AMOLED and 1GB RAM. That's what the leaked brochure claimed, anyway.

Symbian Belle unofficially out for the Nokia C7

Nokia has promised to update its older models (currently running Symbian Anna) to Belle. But if you have a Nokia C7 and are envious of the Belle-running Nokia 701, you can update your phone right now, unofficially, of course.

A leaked image of the Belle update for the C7 surfaced online and can be flashed on the phone using the Phoenix tool. The version of the image is Nokia C7 RM-675 Original RC Belle 111.030.0607 and you need to have Anna on the phone first.
Here's a video that shows the flashing process:

Such DIY flashes always carry some risk, so you might want to wait until the official update is out. Several models are already on Nokia's list to be updated to Belle soon but the Nokia C7 and C6-01 are not on the list (this seems to be region specific).

Anyway, after the update, the Nokia C7 will get pretty close to the 701 experience - but keep in mind you won't get the 1GHz processor, the extra RAM or the bright ClearBlack LCD. Check out how Belle runs on the Nokia N8 (unofficially updated) in this video from August.

Windows Phone 7.1, a.k.a. Mango, goes official, here's what's new

Mango, a.k.a. Windows Phone 7.1, is served - along with 500 new features. Multitasking is among them, as is much deeper social networking integration, improved message handling and more.

The WP 7.1 update will be shipping on new phones this fall and it will be made available to existing Windows Phone 7 users for free at the same time. And there will be new devices to come - aside from the widely publicized deal with Nokia, Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE will be making Windows Phone 7.1 devices too. Nokia also confirmed their first Windows Phone devices will come with this edition of WP7, so the features listed below will be available on those phones as well.

We recently heard Nokia's WP7 phones will use ST-Ericsson's dual-core CPUs, however Microsoft today confirmed they are sticking with Qualcomm's Snapdragon CPUs for the new batch of smartphones. While that's not bad, we'd really like to see custom SoC solutions from manufacturers. With all the same hardware, manufacturers will find it really hard to differentiate their products but we guess, it makes sense from the software development point of view. It just remains to be seen whether Nokia will be the only maker to use chips of its own choice.

Getting back to the promised changes, Microsoft has added a long list of supported languages to greatly expand the reach of Windows Phone to new countries. The limited language localization offered so far has been cited as one of the reasons for the somewhat poor WP7 track record.

Multitasking is, of course, one of the most hotly expected features. It uses a card interface to switch between apps, very similar to what we've seen in WebOS.
Messaging is done on threads, combining various services - within a single conversation you can switch between SMS, Facebook chat and Windows Live Messenger seamlessly. Now that's new. We like innovation like that though the actual implementation by the users will be tricky, that's for sure.

Other messaging changes promise you will be able to dictate your messages or have an incoming text read to you, thanks to the text-to-speech and speech-to-text features.

Twitter and LinkedIn has joined the social networking prowess of Windows Phone too and Facebook check-in functionality as well as face tagging in photos are built-in. You can pin whole groups of people as live tiles and monitor updates from people in the group or message the whole group right from your Start screen.
Live tiles are improved in general - they will display much more info than their v7.0 counterparts.

App connect helps third-party apps integrate into the Hubs of Windows Phone 7.1 to enhance the core experience of the phone. Apps will also be included in search results, making search in Mango much more context aware and hopefully useful. Check out our coverage on the new search features here.

Internet Explorer 9 is coming with the Mango update too (it's based on the capable desktop browser). IE9 for Windows Phone 7.1 supports hardware acceleration.
Bing services have been extended - Bing Vision (think Google Goggles), Music Search and Voice offer new ways to search the web. A curious new feature, called Quick Cards, will give you instant access to key information (including related apps) whenever you search for a product, place, event or movie.
Local scout will help you find what you need nearby - shops, restaurants or activities will be recommended in an "easy-to-use guide".

Nokia's WP7 phones to use U8500 dual-core 1.2GHz chipsets?

The CEO of ST-Ericsson got chatty in front of Forbes and said that Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 devices will be powered by the U8500 dual-core CPU and its successors will go on to power Windows Phone 8 phones too.

So far, Windows Phone 7 devices have been exclusively powered by Qualcomm chipsets (due to Microsoft’s limiting guidelines, which were revised recently). ST-Ericsson’s CEO however says that they will be one of two chip suppliers for Nokia’s WP7 phones (he didn’t who the other was).

The first Nokia devices will use the dual-core U8500 chipset, which has been seen running at 1.2GHz. Things might change by the time these devices come out, but they look to be the first dual-core Windows Phone 7 handsets.

The CEO also said that over the course of 2012 Nokia will release 12 Windows Phone 7 devices that will be based on future versions of the U8500 chipset. He also believes that ST-Ericsson will be a key supplier for Windows Phone 8, yep that's 8.

The Mango update is v7.5, so Windows Phone 8 is already very likely in the works (and the rumor mill suggests that it and Windows 8 will be closely related).

The U8500 has a powerful Mali-400 GPU, the same as on the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II.

New Symbian^3 homescreen leaked by Nokia Germany

Some images posted on the Nokia Germany website just lifted the curtain on one of the features to come in the next Symbian^3 update. What we are seeing is the free-form widgets that were initially rumored to come with the PR 2.0 Anna update, but apparently didn’t make it.

The new Symbian^3 homescreen with free-form widgets

Until now the Symbian^3 widgets had a fixed size and you could only fit a preset number of them on the screen. However when free-form widgets become available you'll be able to reduce those you need less often in size to make room for the more important ones.

Now there’s an outside chance that someone in the Nokia Germany PR department just went too creative on those images, but we really doubt that this is the case. After all, what would be the point in simulating such a minor feature if you don’t plan on ever releasing. It won’t attract any new customers and it might earn you some bad publicity.

So it’s a pretty safe bet that Symbian users will be able to resize their widgets once the next update becomes available. Dubbed PR 3.0 Belle, this upcoming update is expected to hit in the fall, but given that we’re still waiting for the mass availability of the Anna, we wouldn’t bet our salaries on that.

Nokia W7 and W8 will lead the Windows Phone 7 march

Mobile Review's one-man Nokia rumor mill Eldar Murtazin has pushed out some details regarding the first fruits from the 'Microkia' (Microsoft/Nokia) team up, in the form of two new devices bearing the names W7 and W8.

Not only are they not exactly the most original names but the devices in question will apparently resemble the Nokia X7 and the N8 respectively.

Nokia apparently already has one working Windows Phone prototype in their possession, the W7. This X7 lookalike differs from it's Symbian sibling by its WVGA display, 8MP camera with autofocus and a Qualcomm QSD8250 Chipset. This (or something very similar to this) is most likely going to be the company's first WP7 device. Nokia targets availability by Q4 of this year, but there's a good chance that it might take until Q1 of 2012 to see it in action. In its current state the W7 is quite reminiscent of the HTC Mozart in terms of functionality, at least.

The followup to the W7 is naturally, the W8 and there is far greater speculation as this device won't be making an appearance until Q2 2012. However plans to make this a flagship imaging handset mean it has to have a strong skill set to stand out from the crowd. Using the N8 as the basis this one is said to pack a 12MP camera, a Qualcomm dual-core CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU. Specs are most likely going to change before the official release, but this one certainly looks promising.

In total Nokia plan to push 12 new devices out across 2012 (whether this includes the W7 is unclear) with mentions of the third and fourth WP7 handsets in the lineup consisting of a QWERTY candybar with a touchscreen, akin to the E71 or E6, and a 'cheap' touchscreen device probably mimicking the abilities of the W7 but featuring lesser build quality, and weaker imaging capabilities.

It seems they could try to make a bigger impression with some completely fresh designs to really shout about the birth of the WP7 Nokia but what we actually receive could still impress. Perhaps the concept they mocked up for MWC 2011, (a concept that so well embodied both Nokia and WP7) will make a reappearance as something more tangible soon.

Nokia uncovers the E6 and X7, Symbian Anna update

Say hello to a new business model from Nokia and a new music-minded one too – the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7 just went official. Also, the much awaited Symbian^3 update has arrived and it’s called Anna.

First, let’s talk new models. Both the E6 and the X7 are touch-enabled Symbian^3 handsets, but the X7 is a slate with a 4” touchscreen, while the E6 is a bar with a portrait QWERTY and 2.46” VGA touchscreen. Here's what the Nokia E6 product manager had to say about the new phone.

Nokia E6

The Nokia E6 combines glass and stainless steel in a sleek 115.5 x 59 10.5 mm body and has a taste for BlackBerry blood. It packs quad-band 2G and five-band 3G – a true globe trotter. 3G is enhanced with 10.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA.

Nokia E6 combines touchscreen and portrait QWERTY

The E6 also packs Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 with JoikuSpot Premium preinstalled (app that turns the phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot). Nokia have also added enhanced encryption.

The Nokia E6 has an 8MP fixed-focus camera with dual-LED flash capable of 720p HD video recording. Unfortunately, the cameras on both phones lack auto focus.

The Nokia E6 has 8GB of memory built into the phone, expandable by microSD cards up to 32GB.

The Nokia E6 also boasts impressive battery live – up to 28 days of standby and nearly 15 hours of talk time (2G numbers).

Nokia X7

The Nokia X7 packs a 4” nHD AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass (doesn’t say its ClearBlack though) and has a stainless steel body. It comes with an 8GB microSD card pre-installed and a battery that’s good for up to 50 hours of music or 6 hours of video playback.

Nokia E7 is a big-screened music phone

It’s no slouch when it comes to connectivity though – quad-band 2G and tri-band 3G (including a T-Mobile USA compatible version), Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

The Nokia X7 packs the same 8MP camera as the E6 - complete with a dual-LED flash and 720p video recording.

The X7 comes with Nokia WH-701 headset in the box – nothing fancy like the X6 had.
Symbian Anna

Both Nokias run the new Symbian Anna – that’s the Symbian^3 update we’ve been waiting for so long. It packs a split-screen keyboard allowing easier text input, an improved browser and enhanced security features too. The redesigned icons are also part of the new UI. Searching has been simplified in Ovi Maps and the app has grown a new public transportation route feature.

The older Symbian^3 models (N8, E7, C7 and C6-01) will be getting getting the Symbian Anna "in the coming months" as an over the air update. For more information on the update, check our extensive blog post.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7 are both expected to launch in Q2. The E6 price is estimated at €345 ($500) and the X7 price at €370 ($550)

Nokia C6-01 Rp 3,8 Juta, Nokia C7 Rp 4,2 Juta

"Delapan GB mass memory," tegas Legi. Sedangkan, "adiknya", C6-01 memoori internalnya hanya mencapai 340 MB.

Akankah Nokia Kembangkan Ponsel Windows Phone 7?

Beberapa bulan terakhir Microsoft memang gencar membidik sejumlah produsen ponsel agar mengadopsi Windows Phone7.

Nokia Masih Siapkan 10 Ponsel Lagi Hingga Akhir Tahun

Nokia Smartphones Get New Names

There's been quite a few Nokia smartphones being released to date, but the company will now cut down to a select few in four different series.

In conjunction with the announcement of the Nokia C5, Nokia clarified its new naming convention across its smartphone portfolio. Moving forward, there'll be four smartphone brands, including Nokia Cseries, Xseries, Eseries and Nseries. Within each series of devices, there'll be a new range of numbers from 1 to 9, each signifying the range of functionality on offer, and the approximate prices of the devices - with 9 representing the highest end of devices.

The Nokia X3 and X6 were the first phones to use the new naming convention, followed by today's announcement of the Nokia C5. In other words, these three phones are mid-range devices within the respective series. Upcoming Eseries and Nseries smartphones will also be named based on the new naming convention, though specific announcements have not been made.

Nseries

Nseries will remain the flagship series and should offer the most advanced range of products. To date, Nseries has offered N9x, N8x and N7x devices representing mobile computing, camera & gaming and mid-range multimedia smartphones, respectively. AT& T has subsidized N7x devices in the U.S., and it'll be interesting to see whether AT& T will pick up the new breed of Nseries devices now that Nokia is cutting down on the amount of devices to make sure that a select few reach a broader audience. An all-touch phone powered by Symbian^3 is expected to be released in this line later this year.

Xseries

Xseries focuses on social entertainment, meaning that it blends social networking and music playback capabilities. A high-end phone in this range is expected to be released later this year, more specifically a QWERTY slider powered by Symbian^3.

Eseries

Eseries will remain focused on productivity and business. The next big thing in the Eseries is expected to be a slab QWERTY phone powered by a ramped up S60 3rd Edition, featuring a design that'll make images of both BlackBerry and Palm OS smartphones pop up in your mind.

Cseries

Lastly, the new Cseries represents the core range of smartphones by Nokia. The new Nokia C5 will be the first of this kind, powered by a ramped up S60 3rd Edition, offering a host of messaging and social networking features. The Nokia C5 will for instance include a new phonebook where you can see your friends' status updates directly from Facebook.

Nokia unveils low-cost C5 smartphone

Nokia unveiled a new C5 smartphone model on Tuesday, hoping to benefit from a booming demand for cheap smartphones and from rising consumer appetite for mobile social networking.

The C5 handset will be one of the cheapest smartphones from Nokia, selling for 135 euros ($183), excluding taxes and subsidies, and hitting the shelves next quarter.

"It is products like this that will grow Nokia marketshare in the smartphone segment and help them to increase their average sale prices," said John Strand, chief of telecoms consultancy Strand Consult.

Volumes on the smartphone market are seen surging in 2010, with some analysts forecasting up to 50 per cent growth, as handset vendors are pushing advanced features, once exclusive to pricey top-end models, into cheaper and cheaper phones.

Nokia continues to lead the global smartphone market with an around 40 per cent market share, but it has lost ground to Apple's iPhone and RIM's Blackberry.

The Finnish firm is in the midst of a massive revamp of its smartphone offering and has said in 2010 almost all of its smartphones would have a touch screen, a full keyboard or both, compared with less than half in 2009.

NAME CONFUSION

After introducing the C series -- focused on personal social networking -- Nokia has four smartphone product families. The E series phones are for business users, X series for youth and music, and N series for the most advanced models.

It plans to use the new names across its smartphone offering.

Nokia has historically flooded the market with phone models little different from each other, with additional confusion arising from their four digit names, which have been hard to differentiate for consumers.

However, the new naming of X series phones may also create confusion as Sony Ericsson has used the name for few years -- X1 and X2 smartphones are from Sony Ericsson, while Nokia has launched the X3 model.

Sony Ericsson's new flagship device is the X10, while Nokia is also widely expected to launch an X10 cellphone.
