Samsung has introduced a new Android smartphones in China namely the Samsung SCH-W999. In contrast to most other Android smartphone Samsung W999 comes with a flip design.

Samsung SCH-W999 comes with dual-core processor 1.2 GHz from Qualcomm as well as having two identical 3.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution, the phone also comes with Dual SIM card slots that can be connected with GSM and CDMA networks.

Samsung SCH-W999 is present using Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the beautifull TouchWiz user interface created by the Korean vendors.

This phone will be officially launched next year for China market, but the price has not been confirmed by the Samsung.

The hit smartphone Galaxy S II has surpassed the 10 million landmark in global sales. It managed to achieve this in just five months of going on sale.


The previous record holder in Samsung's fleet was the Samsung Star S5230, which managed to cross the 10 million mark in six months. The hot selling Galaxy S managed to achieve the same in about seven months. Being significantly more expensive than both, the fact that the Galaxy S II managed to reach the sales figure in a shorter period of time is quite an achievement.

Then again, this is not surprising. The Galaxy S II has struck a chord with the smartphone buyers thanks to its awesome features and performance and people are shoveling their money at Samsung just to get their hands on the best smartphone on the market right now. Now that the phone has started selling in the US as well, the next landmark will probably take even less time.

Ever wondered why your Andriod smartphone isn't working as well as it should be? Well, Motorola's CEO, Dr. Sanjay Jha, thinks it's because of the open Android Market.

He says that because the Android Market is open, anyone can upload almost any type of applications. Users then download these applications that may have the potential of bringing down the performance or battery life of their devices. He also said that 70% of the phones that are returned are because of issues caused by applications.

Jha claims that the solution lies in MOTOBLUR, Motorola's proprietary software layer that runs on top of their Android phones. Motorola is using BLUR to collect data on the applications that people use on their phones and the way they affect the performance of their devices. Thanks to this information, they will soon be able to issue warnings if an applications, say, is going to have a dramatic effect on the phone's battery life.

Now all that is fine but we must say we aren't particularly big fans of MOTOBLUR. And for all we know BLUR itself could be one of the reason for many of the performance issues. Perhaps Motorola should fine tune their own application before passing the blame around.

According to the latest report by the analysts from Nielsen, Android enjoys the highest usage among smartphone platforms in the United States, followed by iOS and BlackBerry OS.

Some 36 percent of US smartphone users have an Android smartphone. In comparison, 26% are using the Apple iOS while 23% are using RIM's BlackBerry OS.
The remaining 15% of the smartphone pie is taken by Windows Mobile, which still has a decent 9% user base, and by WebOS, Symbian, Windows Phone 7 and PalmOS with. It's a little disappointing to see Symbian despite being the oldest platforms here and still very much alive unlike the now defunct Windows Mobile having no more than 2% market share. Same goes for HP's WebOS, which deserved a lot more success than it received.

Android's overall domination comes as no surprise really, considering the huge number of Android devices out there and new ones coming out almost every other week now. Apple's iOS, on the other hand, has so far been restricted to a handful of devices, ten to be precise, with four versions of the iPhone and iPod touch each and two versions of the iPad, launched over a period of four years. RIM too has a fair number of handsets under its belt and has been around much longer than the other two. We are sure if this chart showed smartphone users across the world, however, the difference between Android and iOS would be even higher as Android phones are available in lot more areas compared to iOS.

Nielsen also has some more statistics for us, including the data usage of all these platforms and once again Android is leading the race with 582MB of monthly data usage compared to 492MB of iOS and 448 MB of WebOS, which has raced past others for the number 3 spot.

Another chart shows us that app downloads consist of a major portion of the data that is downloaded on these phones, with audio streaming coming second and video streaming at third position.

Well it's good news for all Galaxy S owners and an incentive for future Galaxy S II owners as Samsung has kept its promise to give the Gingerbread treatment to the Galaxy S at any cost. And it seems that the update is rolling out anew for the ex-flagship.

Samsung kept the promise it made just days ago and that's deserving of an approving nod.
We remind you that the official update first started rolling out through the Samsung Kies software in March, but was later withdrawn due to issues with it that weren't mentioned. Rumors had it that the delay was due to bugs.

The update is currently available to some Galaxy S users in the UK, but Samsung has confirmed that it might take a while longer to appear with some carriers.

The Gingerbread update should bring several key improvements to the first Galaxy S smartphone - improved performance, less battery drain as well as some usability tweaks.
We hope this time everything will go smooth and everyone will be able to enjoy the latest Android build on their Galaxy S.

Anyway, with the AQUOS 007SH you will also be getting a 0.7” secondary OLED display as well as GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity. There’s also an infrared port on board - a feature that’s still pretty popular in Japan.

The highlights list continues with a microSD slot that allows expanding the internal memory by up to 32 GB, 720p video recording, digital TV tuner and a microHDMI port. The waterproof body of the smartphone measures 113×51.8×19.3mm, which is pretty thick, but it only weighs 140 g.
The AQUOS PHONE THE HYBRID 007SH will become available at SoftBank shops in Japan next month.

Security is a relative term in digital communications, as German researchers discovered after putting Google’s Android OS through some testing. Reportedly, 99.7% of all droids could be broadcasting the authentication key to your personal Google data when connected over unsecured Wi-Fi networks, making it easy for opportunist attackers to gain access to it.

The problem lies in how some Android apps communicate with the cloud servers. You see, researchers discovered apps transmit user name and password to the server securely and the server returns an authentication token to be used so that the app doesn’t have to log in every time it makes a request.

Researchers discovered, however, that this token is the weak link as it's often transmitted insecurely (making it very easy to steal). An attacker can easily steal one of these tokens by sniffing the unsecured public Wi-Fi network you use. And since the token is valid for up to two weeks (from any device), the attacker can go on and sync your contacts or calendar entries to a device of their own.

In short, your droid may be leaking the key to your personal info without you even knowing it. This type of attack is very similar to how the notorious Firesheep could once steal people’s Facebook accounts.

The researchers tested different Android phones, from different vendors, running different OS versions and found that syncing contacts and calendar data is done insecurely prior to v2.3.3. The Gallery app (developed by a third party and not Google) uses the insecure method even in the latest smartphone version of Android.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't limited to Android’s native apps, third party apps are vulnerable too and will have to be updated to patch the hole.

Android owners in the US won’t be happy about this – carriers have started blocking the apps that enable tethering on their phones. It’s a service they charge $15-$20 a month after all, you can’t expect them to let you have it for free.

Reports from all over the Internet are coming in saying that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are all blocking the tethering apps from the Market (both free and paid ones). Sprint seems to be the one operator that hasn’t blocked the tethering apps.

People who live outside the US might be scratching their heads wondering why you’d need an app to do what the OS can do on its own – well, US carriers usually disable that functionality, until you pay of course. AT&T goes as far as locking out the option to install third-party apps from sources other than the Market.

Finding the apps from other sources is much harder that way. And even if you manage to install those, you might get an email from the carrier – AT&T for one, has been sending out messages to those who use tethering without paying for it first.

It's the very reason why the latest 3.0 version of the popular tethering application PDA Net now features cloaking to mask the tethering activity from your carrier.

I don’t mean to sound condescending toward the folks at Nordic Hardware with my title. First, the story: the Samsung Galaxy S II’s GPU doesn’t allow users to run anything at refresh rates greater than 60 frames per second. Boohoo. Since when was 60 frames per second a bad thing? Any graphically demanding game running at 60 frames per second is great, and the overall feel of the OS benefits from it too. But do folks really want or need more?

The argument against 30 frames per second was justified. I experienced the limitation first hand on several HTC devices of yesteryear, including the HTC EVO 4G Developers eventually got around that and delivered 60 frames of goodness per second to all. I was very pleased, impressed, and satisfied with how much snappier it made devices feel (even if actual device performance wasn’t getting a boost). To this day, I remain satisfied. Many others do, too.

What is the point of going further? In 2D and 3D graphics – especially for phone UIs – there is no real world advantage to pushing out as much as you can at the highest framerate. Overall performance can suffer the higher you try to go because your GPU and CPU have to work harder to display a moving image just a bit smoother than what is recognized as the industry standard. Yes, folks, the Mali 400 has a locked frame rate, but you’re likely still going to buy this phone the moment you get a chance.

HTC promised us four Gingerbread updates in Q2 this year - for the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S. They have just begun delivering those upgrades to the Desire HD and Incredible S.

The update is done over-the-air and is about 100MB, so if you don't have an unlimited data plan you should definitely use a Wi-Fi hotspot.

There is no info when the other two updates will roll out, but we guess it should happen in the next few days.

Ah, the power of dual-core processors – it lets you do cool stuff like buttery-smooth multitasking, exciting 3D portable gaming or Full HD videos. The latest Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II packs the new Exynos chipset, which pairs a couple of Cortex-A9 cores with a Mali-400MP GPU. Sounds like a potent mix – at least on paper, so we’re eager to pit it against one of the first phones to offer Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform - the LG Optimus 2X.

What we have in our hands is a pre-release test unit of the Galaxy S II, successor to one of the best selling Android phones. Ours runs its two CPU cores at 1GHz but Samsung announced that the speed will be bumped up to 1.2GHz.

Once that’s done, the I9100 Galaxy S II would be the most powerful droid – until the competition catches up, which won’t take long judging by our rumor mill. Anyway, we’re going to use the chance to put Samsung’s Exynos chipset head to head with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2. We’ll be using the LG Optimus 2X for the benchmarks, which runs at the same clock speed as our Galaxy S II – 1GHz.

We’re already working on our Galaxy S II preview but until that’s done, we just couldn’t resist testing some of the most interesting new features of Samsung’s latest flagship. Here’s what this comparison will be about.

First off, this is our first encounter with the Super AMOLED Plus technology, which improves on an already excellent screen. We’ll run the new display through several tests to determine how it stacks up against the old one and other leading displays on the market.

Next, we’ll get to the camera department – the Galaxy S II comes with an 8MP still shooter that can capture 1080p FullHD videos. That’s our second encounter with such a beast and we’ll be pitting it against the LG Optimus 2X camera, that’s for sure. A surprising guest star in the camera test is the Sony Ericsson Arc, which we recently reviewed as well.

After that comes the test of what makes the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II tick – the new dual-core Exynos chipset. Just keep in mind the Galaxy S II retail version will have 20% more clock speed for each of the two CPU cores.

Finally, we’ll wrap things up with a real-life performance test – how does the Galaxy S II stack up in real world tasks (we’ll be testing the user interface, web browser and games) against a phone with a Tegra 2 chipset (which is quite popular among new smartphones and even tablets).

JAKARTa - Komunitas jejaring sosial mobile Mig33, Rabu (8/12/2010) meluncurkan aplikasi khusus untuk smartphone berbasis Android. Kehadirannya masuk ke platform yang tengah populer di dunia dan banyak digunakan produsen ponsel memperbesar kesempatannya menambah jumlah penggunanya. Sebelumnya, Mig33 bisa diakses di ponsel Java versi J2ME, lewat web, serta WAP.

"Di dunia kami, pengguna Android dan mig33 ini tidak bisa terpisahkan, dan hal ini akan terwujud nyata dalam beberapa bulan mendatang," kata Steven Goh, CEO serta co-founder mig33 dalam siaran persnya. Ia pun mengatakan kalau mig33 dan Android sama-sama bersifat sosial, cerdas, mobile-centric, dan berorientasi pada hiburan. mig33 Android bisa didapatkan di m.mig33.com untuk versi Android 2.1 dan di atasnya.

Saat ini pengguna mig33 lebih dari 40 juta anggota pada perangkat mobile mereka di seluruh dunia dengan 20 juta di antaranya di Indonesia. Pengguna mig33 yang berasal dari lebih dari 200 negara berinteraksi dalam komunitas chat, saling berkirim foto, hadiah virtual, bermain games bersama, saling mengirim pesan, bergabung dalam grup-grup yang ada, menciptakan avatar, dan banyak lagi.

Selain menyediakan layanan interaktif, mig33 juga menawarkan peningkatan penghasilan melalui penjualan mig33 credit yang digunakan pengguna untuk pembelian barang-barang virtual (virtual goods), telepon VoIP, SMS, games, dan lainnya. SAN FRANSISCO - Perusahaan internet terbesar di dunia, Google akhirnya menggelontorkan smartphone keduanya, Nexus S.

Nexus S merupakan smartphone berbasis Android yang dibuat bekerja sama dengan produsen ponsel asal Korea Selatan, Samsung. Ponsel pintar ini muncul untuk menggantikan suksesornya, Nexus One. Bedanya, Nexus S dipersenjatai dengan sistem operasi Android terbaru, Gingerbread.

"Nexus S merupakan perangkat pertama yang dilengkapi dengan platform Android terbaru, yang akan digunakan oleh seluruh produsen handset di seluruh dunia," ujar VP Engineering Google, Andy Rubin, seperti dikutip melalui Straits Times, Selasa (7/12/2010).

Smartphone Android Google terbaru ini akan tersedia di AS mulai 16 Desember nanti melalui distribusi di toko Best Buy dan pada 20 Desember akan tersedia di Carphone Warehouse dan toko ritel Best Buy di Inggris.

Untuk distribusi di AS, Nexus S akan dikontrak dengan jaringan telekomunikasi AS, T-Mobile, ata bisa juga didistribusikan tanpa kontrak (unlocked). Sayangnya Google sepertinya belum memiliki rencana untuk menjual Nexus S di Singapura atau negara Asia lainnya, meski tidak menutup kemungkinan jika perangkat tersebut dapat dibeli secara online.

"Nexus S memberikan apa yang disebut dengan 'pengalaman murni' menggunakan Google, yaitu unlocked, akses tanpa filterisasi ke layanan mobile Google, dan platform Android terbaru dan terbaik," ujar Rubin.

WATERLOO — Selama ini, pengguna BlackBerry harus puas dengan tampilan user interface yang "itu-itu" saja. Namun, cepat atau lambat, Research In Motion (RIM) mungkin bakal melakukan perombakan terhadap desain user interface BlackBerry.

Langkah pertama yang dilakukan RIM adalah membeli The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), sebauh perusahaan desain dari Swedia. Akuisisi terhadap TAT diumumkan 2 Desember 2010 lalu.

"TAT dikenal dengan inovasinya dalam mendesain user interface dan memiliki pengalaman panjang menggarap teknologi perangkat bergerak dan terintegrasi," kata David Yach, Chief technology Officer RIM, dalam blog perusahaan.

Ia mengatakan, tim TAT akan bergabung dengan tim RIM di Kanada untuk memadukan rancangan desainnya ke dalam platform smartphone ataupun tablet BlackBerry Playbook. Selama ini, BlackBerry yang awalnya memang dirancang untuk pengguna profesional hadir dengan desain yang kalah gaya di pasar konsumen ketimbang iPhone.

Desain buatan TAT selama ini banyak dipakai di sitem hiburan di mobil. Framework yang diberi nama Cascade juga dipakai 20 persen smartphone yang dijual sepanjang tahun 2010 ini. TAT mengembangkan desain user interface untuk platform Android. TAT juga memasok desain untuk Motorola, Sony Ericsson, dan Samsung. Lalu, apakah akuisisi ini akan memutus kontrak TAT dengan vendor-vendor tersebut?

"Tentu kami menghormati perjanjian yang sudah kami buat dan tetap melayani konsumen tetap dan memastikan bahwa kedua komitmen bisa berjalan bersama," ujar Paul Blomdahl, salah satu pendiri TAT, dalam menyikapi langkah perusahaan untuk bergabung penuh dengan RIM.

Sebelum membeli TAT, RIM sudah beberapa kali melakukan langkah akuisisi dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, antara lain, QNX Software yang memproduksi sistem operasi untuk BlackBerry PlayBook. Selama ini QNX dikenal sebagai penyedia platform untuk perangkat hiburan di mobil-mobil mewah. RIM juga membeli Torch Mobile sehingga dapat meningkatkan kemampuan browser terbarunya sehingga sejajar dengan pesaingnya. Nama Torch bahkan mendapat kehormatan untuk nama BlackBerry pertama yang menggunakan browser berbasis Web-kit.

JAKARTA - Survey GfK tampaknya akan semakin melonjakkan Android hingga makin menjauhi Symbian. Apalagi jika dedengkot ponsel Android macam HTC Corporation tak kepalang tanggung, merilis dua seri sekaligus di Indonesia. Kedua seri tersebut adalah HTC Desire dengan subbrand, HD dan Z.

HTC Desire HD seperti pernah kami sebut, sangat mengandalkan fitur multimedia untuk memantapkan fungsi ponsel Android yang mampu melakukan banyak hal. Ini bisa dilihat dari dua pendukung dalam hal menunjang kapabilitas proses reporduksi audio, yaitu teknologi Dolby Mobile dan SRS Virtual Sound.

Sementara itu dari segi imaging, ponsel yang memiliki kemampuan untuk melakukan Wi-Fi tethering ini memamerkan sebuah kamera resolusi 8 MP dan layar berukukran 4,3 inci. Tak perlu tanyakan spesifikasi lainnya, karena memang sudah menjadi sebuah standar keharusan sebuah ponsel berperforma tinggi. Namun jika Anda menyangsikan bodinya, berarti Anda salah besar. Sebab, HTC memang sangat peduli dengan material berupa sebuah blok aluminium solid agar konstruksinya terasa kokoh. Sebuah fitur baru dikenalkan yaitu Fast Boot yang tak lain merupakan akses cepat untuk melakukan panggilan juga memeriksa email.

Desaire saudaranya, seri Desire Z tak didedikasikan penuh pada multimedia, namun lebih kepada peruntukan akses social network dalam kondisi mobile. Oleh sebab itu tidak heran peran papan ketik menjadi vital demi memberikan kenyamanan ber-texting. Bahkan beberapa tombol di panel papan ketik pun ditambahkan berupa akses singkat ke berbagai menu yang kerap diaktifkan oleh pengguna.Maka, jangan heran kalau kameranya hanya 5 MP.

Catatan penting lainnya dari kedua seri ini adalah untuk pertama kalinya HTC menggunakan prosesor baru bikinan Qualcomm. Seri Desire HD ditopang oleh Qualcomm seri 8255 Snapdragon yang memiliki kecepatan komputasi sampai 1 GHz. sedangkan sang "saudara" mengenakan seri 7230 yang tentu kecepatannnya lebih rendah (800 MHz).

Tidak seperti Samsung Mobile yang kemudian terinspirasi untuk membangun toko digital Android yang menjual aneka aplikasi ketika berkecimpung di dunia Android. HTC masih bersikukuh pada Google Market. Namun, bukannya tak ada upaya untuk memberikan layanan digital kepada penggunannya. Salah satu yang juga dikenalkan pada peluncuran Rabu (1 Desember) silam adalah HTCSense.com.

Ini adalah sebuah portal yang dapat diakses melalui ponsel HTC maupun PC yang berisi aneka macam layanan digital. Sebut saja wallpaper, audio, widgets, juga konten eksklusif lainnya. Yang menarik adalah fitur yang dapat membesarkan volume ponsel Anda secara otomatis ketika Anda lupa meletakkan. Atau mengunci ponsel secara remotedan mengirimkan pesan pribadi ketika ponsel tiba-tiba raib dan sudah berada di tangan orang lain.

HTC Indonesia memastikan harga Desire HD sebesar Rp 6.599.000,-, sementara Desire Z dibanderol Rp 6.199.000,-. Harap bersabar karena barang baru tersedia di ujung Desember 2010.
